Calculating CO2 emission, by Jouri Smits (with Santrade Ltd.)
July 11, 2013
The goal of this project was to calculate the CO2-emission in 2011 for the three DC’s (Schiedam, Singapore, Hebron) so that in the future a project can be started regarding CO2 reduction. The most difficult part for Santrade in calculating the emission is the fact that they ship very small packages. About 70% of all the shipments are less than two kilograms. If such shipments are shipped with non dedicated trucks, it is very difficult to assign CO2-emission to that shipment. Another problem with the non dedicated courier networks is that the network details are not available. We do not know whether they drive the shortest route or the fastest route. And that can make a great difference in emission of CO2. The calculations of the emission were done with Microsoft Office Excel 2007 (MS Excel) and the Terra tool, developed by TU/e students.
