Forecasting capacity usage in a hospital environment from a DRG and a capacity unit perspective, by Lizanne Pieters (with Catharina Hospital)

This thesis is the result of a graduation project which is conducted at Gupta Intelligent Data Solutions (GIDS) and at the Catharina Hospital in Eindhoven. This report investigates to what extent financial data from the hospital’s data warehouse can be translated into valuable information and knowledge regarding the expected capacity usage over time per DiagnosisRelated Group (DRG) and per capacity unit. In this thesis, the hospital is considered to be a matrix organization in which the patient flow perspective and the capacity unit perspective are combined. The DRG ‘colorectal carcinoma’ is used as a case study for the patient flow perspective, while the endoscopy department is used as a case study for the capacity unit perspective. A stochastic Time-Phased Bill-of-Resources (TPBBOR) is determined for each relevant DRG considering the expected capacity usage of each capacity unit of interest. These TPBORs are used to forecast the DRGs’ future expected capacity usage of a particular capacity unit.
